Course description
The subject of human anatomy holds an endless fascination for many of us, yet its study can easily become a frustrating process of memorizing, and then quickly forgetting countless details. Yoga provides a singular opportunity to the anatomy student because it shows us which details are important to focus on, and integrates those details into a unified vision of human existence. It is the specific intention of this course to provide a creative and engaging learning environment that will make the course material a living, breathing part of our personal and professional lives.
This course provides a practical grounding in the essentials of the anatomy and physiology of yoga practice with a particular emphasis on the relationship between breathing and healthy spinal function. To that end, each trimester covers the material from a different perspective. The fall session focuses on the anatomy and pressure mechanics of breathing, the three diaphragms and the thoracic and abdominal muscles. The winter session covers the evolution and anatomy of spinal mechanics, the development of postural support and articular freedom. The spring session deals with yoga physiology, balance and equilibrium and hands-on techniques of yoga therapy and assisted practice.
Each 11 to 13-week trimester is a self-contained unit, so the course can be started at the beginning of any of the three trimesters. Some of the topics that will be covered in-depth are:
- The evolution, structure and function of the spinal column
- The evolution and function of breathing, and its relation to spinal movements
- The anatomy and physiology of the diaphragm and respiratory mechanism
- Breath as the integrating principle of posture, movement and yoga practice
