Deborah Quilter
Deborah Quilter is a movement educator with a specialty in helping people overcome injuries without strain. As author of two books on repetitive strain injury (RSI) Ms. Quilter began to investigate various healing techniques, and eventually began teaching her own movement program, which she discovered also worked well with other chronic pain conditions, as well as relieving anxiety and stress.
Since 1997, Ms. Quilter has taught her program to many people, in both group and private settings, and her program has been featured in several national magazines. She founded a program to teach yoga to senior citizens at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City, and has taught at health clubs including Clay, Liberty Fitness, the New York Health & Racquet Club.
As an ergonomics expert, Ms. Quilter has appeared on NBC News, Fox News, New York 1, Canal + (French t.v.), Pure Oxygen, Woman of the Week and has been interviewed by many national newspapers, magazines and radio shows. She also wrote a monthly column on ergonomics for Computer Currents. Ms. Quilter has lectured on repetitive strain injury at the New York Times, Time Inc. and various business, medical and lay groups around the country. Ms. Quilter performs workstation evaluations, and computer technique training for private and corporate clients. Her website, rsihelp.com, receives thousands of visitors each month. She was the keynote speaker for two conferences on RSI in the Netherlands in November 2000.
Ms. Quilter's books include (The Repetitive Strain Injury Recovery Book (Walker, New York 1998) and the best-selling Repetitive Strain Injury: A Computer User's Guide (with Emil Pascarelli, M.D., Wiley, New York 1994), which Amazon.com called the "bible" of RSI. Jane Brody, health columnist for The New York Times, called the book "a comprehensive guide dealing with many repetitive stress injuries." Associated Press chose Repetitive Strain Injury as one of seven books for its "Health & Fitness" special edition. Quality Paperback Book Club chose Repetitive Strain Injury as one of its selections. It is recommended reading at the Harvard School of Public Health and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Readers call the book "the best and most complete guide on this subject." The book is published in two separate Chinese language editions. The Repetitive Strain Injury Recovery Book is published in Dutch.
In addition to her books on repetitive strain injury, she is founding editor in chief of Pilates Style magazine. Her articles have appeared in The New York Times, Good Housekeeping, The Columbia Journalism Review, The New York Daily News, The San Francisco Chronicle, Woman, Fitness, The Physician and Sportsmedicine, and many other national and regional publications.
Ms. Quilter studied Ergonomic Guidelines for Computer Use at the Harvard School of Public Health, and the Biomechanics of Human Movement at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She is a certified yoga teacher and personal trainer, and holds certifications in therapeutic yoga and as a group fitness instructor and personal trainer from the American Council on Exercise, Spanda®: the Yoga of Movement and Marymount Manhattan College.
