2014: A Series of 10 Weekend Workshops

Take a deeper dive into anatomy, kinesiology, physiology and embryology during intimate weekend workshops, limited to 15 students.

This is active learning: using lecture, discussion and practice, these workshops focus on development of embodied teaching skills and explore what it “is” to transmit information with skill. Movement experiences will let you connect with the structures you’re learning about in a richer context than from books alone.

You will be challenged to use these explorations to develop principles of skillful teaching and put them into practice. During this year’s course, Layers and Patterns, we will explore:

  • The Spine as a Limb #1: Head & Neck
  • The Spine as a Limb #2: Sacrum & Tail
  • Grounding: Feet are Fundamental
  • Foundation: Spinal Patterns
  • Transformation: Fluids & Prevertebral Patterns
  • Creating Movement: The Muscular System
  • Organizing Movement: PNF Patterns
  • Synthesis: Asana Analysis #1
  • Synthesis: Asana Analysis #2
  • Transitions: Embodied Mind

The workshops are open to people interested in expanding their understanding of anatomy, kinesiology and physiology who want to develop teaching in the context of embodiment. You can take the workshops individually and in any order, though the final three weekends require attendance at previous workshops.

May 31 - Jun 1, 2014Transformation: Fluids & Prevertebrate Patterns

Fluids protect and nourish our tissues, facilitate communication and create the potential for transformation in our bodies. In the fluid space of the womb we first explored movement – learning about our selves, our boundaries and the environment that surrounds us. In this workshop we will explore the prevertebrate movement patterns that develop in utero, and the various manifestations of fluid potentials in our tissues.

Recommended reading for this weekend is Cat’s Paws and Catapults, by Steven Vogel.

Jun 21 - 22, 2014Creating Movement: The Muscular System

Check back soon for details.

Sep 13 - 14, 2014Organizing Movement: PNF Patterns

Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) is a body of work developed to promote functional, integrated, whole-body movement. PNF incorporates movement re-patterning principles and techniques, as well as specific movement patterns. In this workshop, we will look at proprioception and the interaction between our nervous system and muscles in movement. We will learn about and practice hands-on re-patterning techniques, and we’ll explore movement initiation and sequencing through the spiraling, three-dimensional patterns of PNF.

Practices in Embodied Teaching workshops are geared towards people who have had basic training in anatomy and kinesiology, and have some teaching experience.

Possible prior training could be Anatomy of Breath-Centered Yoga with Leslie Kaminoff OR Embodied Anatomy & Kinesiology with Amy Matthews OR a 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training equivalent OR equivalent training in another discipline.

The final three workshops in the two-year series (Synthesis: Asana Analysis #1 and #2, Transitions: Embodied Mind) are open only to people who have taken at least seven previous workshops in this program and with the permission of the teacher.

Full Year (10 workshops) $3,300

I’ve learned a lot with Amy: about Yoga, BMC, LMA… and the most important: about teaching, the way she teaches (for me) is very clear, precise, simple… and the same time is full of a combination of her presence, compassion and an absolute respect for what you are and “your moment” that I haven’t seen it before.

Studying anatomy and kinesiology with Amy Matthews is fun and interesting!  Surrounded by lots of visual aids, Amy breaks apart complicated concepts into bite-size pieces that are easy to understand.  She has provided me with a new understanding of the human body that has radically changed the way I practice and teach yoga.  Amy is a present and accessible teacher with extraordinary knowledge, wisdom and insight into the human body and how it moves.
